Before colonia Juárez became one of Mexico City’s most vibrant cultural hubs, jewelry designer Sophie Simone Cortina had already made it home. The Franco-Mexican was among the first wave of artists and visionaries to bet on the neighborhood’s untapped potential. Since founding Sophie Simone Designs in 2009, she has transformed her love for Mexican craftsmanship into a global jewelry brand worn by tastemakers like Salma Hayek, Naomi Watts and Owen Wilson, and featured by institutions like London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and Museo Tamayo.
In her luminous boutique just steps from Soho House, Sophie curates not just her own collections, but a carefully selected mix of contemporary Mexican design, such as Alejandro Carlín, Rebranded, Fózfora and La Troupe, turning the space into a creative sanctuary that reflects the soul of the neighborhood.
In this interview, she invites us into her world, shares her love for La Juárez, and explains why she believes the future of fashion—and culture—lives at the intersection of community and creativity.
Tell us a bit about how you ended up in La Juarez. What first drew you in?
I moved to La Juárez 10 years ago, before it was trendy! I was living in La Roma and decided to move into this beautiful European style apartment that was absolutely stunning and bet on la Juárez. The best decision I ever made, and in hindsight, it was a bold and visionary move. When I opened my boutique in calle Lucerna, there was not much going on around this area of la Juarez. Now, I am surrounded by ultra cool places such as Soho House, Cana, La Taverna and Hanky Panky, just to name a few.
How would you describe the spirit of the neighborhood to someone who’s never been?
La Juárez today is probably the trendiest neighborhood in Mexico City. It is filled with galleries, exceptionally good restaurants, fun night life and the most exclusive boutiques.
What changes have you seen in the community in recent years—for better or worse?
I have seen the community change from just a local community to an international one. It is definitely for the better, as this international influence has created a new atmosphere and has brought more creative energy. I see it in my boutique, most of my clients are now from everywhere around the globe! It’s wonderful.
What keeps you here? What makes it feel like home?
I feel like this neighborhood is my home, a lot of close friends live only blocks away and I know every single business in the surrounding area. Walking my dog every day and saying hello to everyone along the way is amazing.
What excites you about the future of the neighborhood? Any shifts or trends you’re seeing?
I feel like La Juárez is just getting started! There are lots of new businesses and restaurants opening every single day and it is super exciting to watch and live this transformation.
Tell us about your designs, what can we find at the Sophie Simone Designs boutique?
Our designs are a thoughtful fusion of contemporary aesthetics and artisanal craftsmanship. At our shop, you’ll find pieces that blend modern design with traditional techniques, resulting in jewelry that is not only visually striking but also rich in character, symbolism, and story. In addition to selling jewelry, we offer personalized styling advice, custom jewelry design, and cleaning and maintenance services. We also organize private events and, soon, workshops where clients can learn more about design and create their own pieces.
From jewelry to design, your shop highlights some of Mexico’s most exciting talent. What guides your selection process when it comes to curating these brands?
We select Mexican designers who share our philosophy of conscious design, ethical production, and a connection to local culture. We prioritize proposals with a strong identity, artisanal quality, and an authentic vision that celebrates Mexican heritage from a contemporary perspective. We’re interested in working with brands that value handcrafting processes, use responsible materials, and tell stories through their garments.
Anything else we should know?
As a native of Mexico City, I can genuinely say that this neighborhood is one of the most vibrant and inspiring corners of the city. It’s full of life, creativity, and a unique energy that constantly fuels our work. Antes de que la colonia Juárez se convirtiera en uno de los centros culturales más vibrantes de la Ciudad de México, la diseñadora de joyería Sophie Simone Cortina ya la había hecho su hogar. Esta franco-mexicana fue parte de la primera ola de artistas y visionarios que apostaron por el potencial aún no explorado del barrio. Desde que fundó Sophie Simone Designs en 2009, ha transformado su amor por la artesanía mexicana en una marca global de joyería, usada por figuras como Salma Hayek, Naomi Watts y Owen Wilson, y destacada por instituciones como el Victoria & Albert Museum de Londres y el Museo Tamayo.
En su luminosa boutique, a unos pasos de Soho House, Sophie no solo presenta sus propias colecciones, sino también una cuidada selección de diseño mexicano contemporáneo, con marcas como Alejandro Carlín, Rebranded, Fózfora y La Troupe, convirtiendo el espacio en un santuario creativo que refleja el alma del barrio.

Cuéntanos un poco sobre cómo llegaste a La Juárez. ¿Qué fue lo que te atrajo al principio?
Me mudé a La Juárez hace 10 años, antes de que se pusiera de moda Vivía en la Roma y decidí mudarme a un hermoso departamento de estilo europeo que era absolutamente impresionante, y aposté por La Juárez. Fue la mejor decisión que he tomado, y con el tiempo. Cuando abrí mi boutique en la calle Lucerna, no pasaba mucho por esta zona de La Juárez. Ahora, estoy rodeada de lugares ultra cool como Soho House, Cana, La Taverna y Hanky Panky, por mencionar algunos.
¿Cómo describirías el espíritu del barrio a alguien que nunca ha estado?
La Juárez hoy probablemente es el barrio de mayor tendencia de la Ciudad de México. Está lleno de galerías, restaurantes excepcionalmente buenos, una vida nocturna divertida y las boutiques mas exclusivas.
¿Qué cambios has visto en la comunidad en los últimos años—para bien o para mal?
He visto cómo la comunidad pasó de ser solamente local a ser una comunidad internacional. Definitivamente ha sido para bien, ya que esta influencia internacional ha creado una nueva atmósfera y ha traído más energía creativa. Lo veo en mi boutique; la mayoría de mis clientes ahora vienen de todas partes del mundo. ¡Es maravilloso!
¿Qué te mantiene aquí? ¿Qué hace que este lugar se sienta como tu hogar?
Muchos amigos cercanos viven a solo unas cuadras y conozco todos los negocios que me rodean. Me encanta pasear con mi perra “Milanesa” todos los días y saludar a todos en el camino.
¿Qué te emociona sobre el futuro del barrio? ¿Algún cambio o tendencia que estés notando?
Siento que La Juárez apenas está comenzando. Cada día abren nuevos negocios y restaurantes, y es súper emocionante ser testigo y parte de esta transformación.
Háblanos de tus diseños, ¿qué podemos encontrar en la boutique Sophie Simone Designs?
Nuestros diseños son una fusión entre estética contemporánea y artesanía tradicional. En nuestra tienda encontrarás piezas que combinan el diseño moderno con técnicas tradicionales, resultando en joyas visualmente impactantes y llenas de carácter, simbolismo e historia.
Además de la venta de joyería, ofrecemos asesoría personalizada de estilo, diseño de piezas a medida, así como servicios de limpieza y mantenimiento. También organizamos eventos privados y próximamente, talleres donde los clientes podrán aprender más sobre diseño y crear sus propias piezas.
Tu boutique, además, apuesta por una selección de ropa y accesorios de otros proyectos mexicanos. ¿Cómo es tu proceso de selección?
Seleccionamos diseñadores mexicanos que comparten nuestra filosofía de diseño consciente, producción ética y conexión con la cultura local. Priorizamos propuestas con identidad propia, calidad artesanal y una visión auténtica que celebre la herencia mexicana desde una perspectiva contemporánea. Nos interesa trabajar con marcas que valoren los procesos manuales, utilicen materiales responsables y cuenten historias a través de sus prendas.
¿Algo más que deberíamos saber?
Como originaria de la Ciudad de México, puedo decir con toda sinceridad que este barrio es uno de los rincones más vibrantes e inspiradores de la ciudad. Está lleno de vida, creatividad y una energía única que alimenta constantemente nuestro trabajo. En nuestra boutique, estamos orgullosos de formar parte de esta comunidad: nos encanta conectar con nuestros vecinos, así como con visitantes de todas partes del mundo que nos sorprenden y enriquecen con sus historias. Juntos, celebramos la belleza cotidiana de la vida en este lugar tan increíble.
